Creative Writing Workshops

Angie Tonucci and Mary Senger led a creative writing club for teens locally at the public library in Springfield, IL from 2016 until the pandemic hit in 2020.  It was hugely successful, and we had a lot of teens involved, calling them the "Imaginators" as they worked together twice a month to brainstorm ideas, practice writing exercises, start new creative projects, and finetune their skills.  After a long hiatus, WE ARE BACK for both teens AND young adults!  And now, because we will be virtual, the workshops are open to everyone, no matter where you are!  The meetings are a safe and positive space for learning and sharing.  We encourage diverse personal experiences in writing by being open to all, and we have a strong focus on empowering marginalized voices.  BIPOC, LGBTQ+ people, and people with disabilities are especially encouraged to participate!

The TEEN workshop is open to middle and high school students who are at least 13 years old and meets on the FIRST WEDNESDAY of every month from 7-9pm Central Time.

The YOUNG ADULT workshop is open to high school seniors up to age 25. This group meets on the THIRD THURSDAY of every month from 7-9pm Central Time. (So if you're a high school senior, you may attend BOTH!)

In addition to the monthly Zoom workshops, we have a Discord server that ANYONE can join, regardless of age. We use it to keep in touch and motivated between meetings. There are writing prompts and challenges, resources, book recommendations, contest links, space to share work-in-progress for feedback, and more! Join our server here.

Angie is an editor, author, and poet who has extensive professional experience with kids and teens, including three years as a substitute teacher with Virginia Beach Public Schools, eight years working with schools, Girl Scout troops, and other organizations as a Humane Educator, four years as the Volunteer Manager of the Springfield Animal Protective League, two years as an AVID tutor at Lincoln Magnet School, two years as an AmeriCorps Youth Mentor with Boys & Girls Club of Central Illinois, and two years as a Science Educator for the NASA JPL Solar System Ambassador Program.  Angie has been working as a facilitator for the Phoenix Center yOUTh group since May of 2019.

Mary has a degree in English Education with a Middle School Endorsement, having taught lessons on Rhetoric, Storytelling, and Early American Literature. She led her own screenwriting workshop in 2016 with students ages 8-14, walking the group through writing, storyboarding, and producing a short film. Additionally, she spent two years at the Blessed Sacrament School Before and After School Enrichment Program with students aged 3-14, assisting with activities and crafts, homework, and general childcare. Currently, Mary works at Henson Robinson Zoo as Lead Recreation Associate and will be working with the Education Facilitator to provide programming for youths. She also works for Girl Scouts of Central Illinois during the summer as a counselor at Camp Widjiwagan.

References for both Angie and Mary are available upon request, and parents/guardians of minors are welcome to join in on their child's first meeting to check it out!
